Antony Moss has worked in the world of wine for over twelve years. His interest in wine was first sparked when he got engaged and started to read the notes included in his future father-in-law’s monthly mail-order cases of wine. After his marriage he took a job as a Saturday sales assistant at S.H Jones Wines in Leamington Spa to help supplement his research grant. What followed was a change in career, from theoretical physics to the world of wine.
After moving to London in 2001, he worked first for Thresher and then Sainsbury’s as a Wine and Spirits Manager. He moved to the Wine and Spirit Education Trust in 2004, to become their Research and Development Assistant, having previously gained their Diploma in Wines and Spirits. While there he rose through the ranks to become Research and Development Director and in August 2012 became Director of Strategy.
His studying didn’t stop with the WSET Diploma though and in 2006, he embarked on the Master of Wine programme, becoming one of only a handful of people in the history of the qualification to pass both the theory and practical papers at the first attempt. It took a few more years to complete his dissertation, but in 2011 he finally became a Master of Wine. More recently Antony has been studying for an MBA and is nearing completion of it.
Antony is an experienced lecturer and trainer. He is an exceptional writer, and has edited or rewritten all of the WSET’s qualifications over his time there, including researching and authoring textbooks and chapters on sake, baijiu, shochu and soju.
Now freelance, Antony is working on a number of different projects and is pursuing a long-held personal interest in sustainability and how organisations can improve the way they work so as to have minimal impact on the environment.
Antony lives in Medway with his wife Lois and their three kittens, Freyja, Fasolt and Fafnir. When not working, Antony likes to relax by listening to and playing music, being an accomplished player of both the piano and the trombone. Primarily his interests lie in classical music and opera – Schoenberg, Janacek and Wagner being particular favorites. On occasion he even joins his wife at heavy metal concerts.
Other interests include travel, especially travel to non-wine regions, otherwise trips can end up as something of a busman’s holiday. Antony also likes to cook and is quite the dab hand at risotto and roast dinners. His roast potatoes have to be eaten to be believed, but he tends to leave the gravy making to Lois.
